Something of a trendsetter in the central part of the U.S., Michigan was the first Midwestern state to legalize recreational cannabis, in 2018. And the Wolverine State’s approval of medical marijuana dates all the way back to 2008, although that program required an overhaul in 2016.
The first full year of legal recreational use (although legalized in 2018, legal sales didn’t begin until December of 2019) saw huge returns, with sales growing every month to a total of $440 million statewide. Some expect that figure to double in Year Two (source: MJBizDaily), and that might be a pretty accurate prediction: The Michigan Marijuana Regulatory Agency (MRA) estimates $67 million in sales in January of 2021 alone.
Even given all that demand for legal cannabis, the illicit market continues to be a problem in Michigan as it is in many other states. And certain rural areas remain underserved by legitimate retail operations.
For those reasons, on March 1st the state relaxed the requirements for growers and dispensaries alike. Applicants will no longer be required to hold an active medical marijuana permit as they had in the past. This greatly broadens the playing field, and the likely result is some intense competition, especially at the retail level.
